Sarada Sarita (b. 1987) is a Dutch-Chilean dancer and choreographer. As a child of a dancer’s family, she practised a wide spectrum of dance styles from an early age, from classical ballet and tap to jazz and hip-hop. Sarita studied at the dance school of Lucia Marthas and at the Peridance Centre of Art & Alignment (New York) with Anne-Marie DuchĂȘne. She is a pioneer in the Dutch dance scene: she was one of the first to bring voguing and waacking to the Netherlands. In her career, Sarita has worked with ISH and Het Nationale Ballet, among others, and won the BNG Bank Dance Prize in 2019 together with Christian Yav and Sedrig Verwoert. She has been an in-house maker at Korzo since 2021.
Sarita is a creative maker and dancer with charisma, presence and feminine power. Natural qualities that she increasingly embraces and utilises in making her work. Her immersion in street and club styles like vogue and waacking fits her signature seamlessly in that respect. From 2012 to 2016, Sarita lives alternately in the US and the Netherlands; in New York, she draws inspiration from vogue and waacking from pioneers within the American scene. These are styles that fit seamlessly with Sarita’s beliefs. Vogue and waacking originated in the Latin and African-American LGBTQI+ scene as a form of expression in response to the oppression experienced. They are styles that celebrate not fitting into boxes. In her work as a maker, Sarita finds it vital to convey this and celebrate otherness, showing the human experience in all its different colours and emotions. In doing so, all voices are equal and, through extensive studio research, she also draws on the experiences and stories of the dancers she works with.
